Philadelphia (March 2011) – UCI Architects has been awarded the 2011 Grand Jury Historic Preservation Achievement Award from the Preservation Alliance of Greater Philadelphia for the renovation of historic Richard Humphreys Hall on the campus of Cheyney University of Pennsylvania.
“We are honored to be recognized by the Preservation Alliance and hope that the rehabilitation of Humphreys Hall ensures the presence of this important building for future generations of Cheyney students. Preservation not only retains the character of the campus but also represents one of the greenest methods of development by reusing existing building fabric” said Fon Wang, AIA, LEED AP, President of UCI Architects.
The scope of architectural services included the complete interior and exterior renovation of the first academic building on Cheyney University’s historic quadrangle. The fieldstone walls, wood windows and brick chimneys were rehabilitated, and the slate roof was replaced in kind. The building will serve as residential suites for student scholars.
The 1950 one story annex building was demolished allowing the building to return to its original configuration. The site of the annex was renovated for recreational green space and includes an open pavilion constructed with stone that was salvaged from the demolition.
“Richard Humphreys Hall is the historic heart of Cheyney University and a significant African American heritage site whose original appearance had been significantly altered over time. Our jury was impressed with the design team’s sensitivity to the building’s potential and the care shown in guiding its transformation. This beautiful restoration project has returned Humphreys Hall to its rightful place as the cornerstone of the campus.” said Alliance Executive Director John Andrew Gallery.
The award will be presented to UCI Architects at the18th annual Preservation Achievement Awards Luncheon on May 17. This popular event provides industry professionals and Preservation Alliance supporters the unique opportunity to share in celebrating the efforts involved in maintaining the historic fabric of our region.
