Constructed around the turn of the Century, the stations on the Frankford Elevated Subway line were in a state of disrepair. SEPTA redesigned these stations in 1984, scheduling Girard Station for construction in 1993. When construction was ready to begin, SEPTA found the earlier design had to be adapted to new code and operational requirements. UCI Architects redesigned the stations to comply with the recently enacted Americans with Disabilities Act. The station platforms were redesigned and a new overpass was added. The new design also required the addition of two elevators, a revised signage package, and new safety features. The result was SEPTA’s first fully accessible elevated subway station and the prototype for implementation of universal access on all elevated stations on this very busy transit route.
