Independence Branch Library, Free Library of Philadelphia
Community

Centrally located in its catchment area, this new branch library fills a void of library services in a denselypopulated and diverse area of Philadelphia. The main reading room was created from a windowless former exhibition hall with high ceilings. The task of transforming this hulking black box into a bright and inviting space was achieved by up-lighting the ceiling, creating multiple levels of ceiling planes, commissioning
a custom wall-to-wall mural, and a vibrant carpet pattern that delineates the children and adult activities.

This project also included the creation of ancillary spaces such as a community room and staff areas. Since completion, this library has become the most widely used branch in Philadelphia.

Completion: 2001
Location: Philadelphia, PA
12,000 Sq.Ft.
