The Philadelphia Zoo undertook a comprehensive re-theming of the south end of the historical zoological gardens. The African savanna depicted through the selection of special building and landscaping materials. The addition of three attractions energizes a portion of the zoo which had been underutilized. Exhibits for cheetahs, wild dogs, and ibises were renovated to provide improved animal environments and enhanced landscaping. The camel ride has been relocated to an tree canopied ridge. Utilizing elements of the former south gate monorail station is a sequence of elevated rustic observation pavilions linked by ramped bridges. These overlooks provide new vantage points to view the animals below.
