Veterinary Diagnostic Center, PA Department of Agriculture
Healthcare & Laboratories

The laboratory building replaces a sixty-five year old facility and expands the testing and research capability of the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. Included within the new building are state-of-the-art laboratories, offices and other support spaces, a necropsy (animal autopsy) suite, and an incinerator. The exterior of the building is clad in both masonry and profiled metal panels. The building massing recalls the variegated nature of the vernacular farm buildings common to Pennsylvania. A large element on the principal street facade is a brick and metal clad silo containing an intercommunicating stairway. Materials at both the interior and exterior were carefully chosen for their cost-effectiveness, durability, and aesthetic qualities.

Completion: 1993
